The reduction in the level of comprehension of students today has spurred on neuroscientists to initiate research in to the use of color and visuals to stimulate the learning process. It has been found that reading in black and white sometimes leads to the shut down of various parts of the brain. This has resulted in students getting bored by reading, and hence lowers their comprehension levels.
It is believed that color and images stimulate and activate the brain, and so students tend to find it more exciting. As a result, they are more interested and respond in a more positive manner. As they absorb what they see, their power of comprehension also improves.

In spite of the major advances made in the fields of science and technology, it is a matter of concern that the level of literacy in America seems to be declining. It has been reported that over eight million students in USA are unable to read, or even comprehend what they are reading, at a basic level. Statistics claim that over seven thousand students are dropping out of school every day.
This inability to read at grade level, compounded by the high drop out figures, is a reflection of the inadequacies of the education system. How is the next generation supposed to succeed in life if it isn’t literate?

The arrival of cable and satellite television has given birth to a generation of couch potatoes. Gone are the days when youngsters read books. They find it so much easier to just watch TV or go on line to surf the Net. In the process, generation after generation of children has got out of the reading habit.
There was a time when students referred to reference books to augment their studies. But now, they simply go on the Internet and download and print out information. The concept of taking notes is now obsolete. As a result, they also lack the ability to write well.

The American education system has now found an innovative way to involve parents in their children’s education easily. This is thanks to what is called Student Information Systems. This has resulted in opening up new communication lines between districts and the parents. It offers parents access to data pertaining to their children’s grades, attendance, behavior logs and evaluations.
For parents whose work schedules don’t give them the time to attend PTA meetings, this is the easiest way to stay abreast of their children’s academic progress. All they need is an Internet connection to be able to log on to the SIS.

When Student’s Reach out for Help

Most parents and teachers are only interested in a student’s academic accomplishments. As long as the student shows high grades, no one really tries to find out if s/he is facing any problems. Teachers only tend to contact parents if a student is in some kind of trouble.
Many students do things to get into trouble, to draw attention to them selves. This may have nothing to do with their studies, but is meant to be a cry for help. So if a students grades are slipping or homework is not done, it may well be for other reasons and could be worth looking into.

Of Parent and Child

How involved are parents with their children’s education today? In the old days, it was a common sight to see parents thronging a PTA meeting, interacting with their children’s teachers, checking on their child’s progress at school. However, this habit seems to be fading out. Fewer parents wait for their children to come home, to ask them about their homework or grades.
Although parents are still involved with their children’s education at the elementary stage, this tends to get reduced at the middle and high school levels. This lack of parental involvement is obviously having a detrimental effect on their children’s education.

Teachers and the American Education System

It is disconcerting, to say the least, to note the attrition rate among teachers today.  Teachers are the cornerstone of the academic world and yet it is becoming more and more difficult to retain them in the school system. Teaching in itself is such a demanding profession and has a great deal of responsibility attached.

It is appalling to note that 46% of newly qualified teachers in USA don’t last even five years. In urban areas this figures crosses the 50% mark. And it is an accepted fact that almost 90% of teachers hired are replacing teachers who have quit and not retired.
